About Us

Jesuit Educational Research Institute (JERI) is an independent and nonprofit organization focused on bridging the gap between empirical information and non-empirical information in our society. As an academic research and evaluation institute, JERI seeks to foster educational research and evaluation, inform policy and/or reform, and serve academic and educational activities. Founded on the principle of “illuminating the masses”, JERI seeks to enlighten the masses through academic, empirical, and scientific studies to increase verifiable information and knowledge. One of the challenges that our society faces today is the lack of empirical studies to inform many topics, subject matters, and areas that affect the safety, health, and well-being of individuals, communities, and our nation at large. JERI is that bridge that seeks to close that gap. We hope to partner with the government and other organizations to harness the power of research and evaluation to help individuals and communities change the world.

Current Project: The Chitonga-English Dictionary Project

The Chitonga-English and English-Chitonga Dictionary is a mult-layer project executed in phases of 2 years. The current phase is scheduled to run through July 2027. This is a dictionary project that seeks to compile a two-part dictionary: (part one, the Chitonga-English section, and part two, the English-Chitonga section. The primary aim of the project is to produce the first ever Zambia student’s Chitonga language dictionary for use in the school curriculum, other learning institutions, and the local communities in Zambia. The expected outcomes of the project include, but are not limited to (a) Compile a two-part Chitonga-English dictionary (b) Preserve the Chitonga language (c) Promote and improve the Chitonga language mastery among the people, and (d) Preserve the traditions, customs, and culture of the Batonga People Not only of Zambia, but also Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi.

Choobe Maambo S.J

Choobe Maambo S.J. is a member of the Society of Jesus in the Southern Africa Province (SAP). He is a native of the Batonga-speaking people, born just in the peripheries of Chikuni Mission the first Jesuit settlement in Zambia. He is the director of the Chitonga-English Dictionary project whose primary aim is to produce the first-ever Zambia student Chitonga  language dictionary.
